On 13 and 14 of June 2022 two students from the Department of Environmental Science at Stockholm University defended their PhD thesis, both of them closely linked to the Artic and to Ny-Ålesund Research Station.

Aerosol-cloud interactions in a warming Arctic

Linn Karlsson with her thesis “Aerosol-cloud interactions in a warming Arctic.”

Linn Karlsson thesis “Aerosol-cloud interactions in a warming Arctic” focuses on aerosol–cloud interactions and to improve our understanding what role clouds play in the Arctic climate and how they will respond to climate change. Specifically it focused on studying the microphysical properties of aerosol particles and cloud nucleating particles—the subset of aerosol particles that participate in cloud formation. This was done both through field experiments in the high Arctic over the pack ice and by analysis of an existing two-year data set from Zeppelin station at Ny-Ålesund.

Chemical perspectives on aerosol-cloud-interactions in the high Arctic

Karolina Siegel and her thesis “Chemical perspectives on aerosol-cloud-interactions in the high Arctic.”

Karolina Siegel thesis “Chemical perspectives on aerosol-cloud-interactions in the high Arctic” investigates the chemical composition and CCN activity of aerosols in the Arctic using a Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer with a Filter Inlet for Gases and Aerosols (FIGAERO-CIMS). It covers results from the research cruise with Swedish icebreaker Oden and year long observations at Zeppelin station at Ny-Ålesund.
