Funding and Access Opportunities
In general, researchers planning to work in Ny-Ålesund are expected to have their own funding in place. This funding should cover travel to and from Svalbard, accommodation, and any additional infrastructure or logistical services required during the stay.
However, several access support programs exist that researchers can apply to for financial and logistical support. These programs operate at different levels and scales, and some are specifically aimed at providing access to polar field sites, including the institutions at Ny-Ålesund Research Station.
Access Support Programs
POLARIN Transnational Access
The EU project POLARIN offers transnational access to selected polar research infrastructures, including facilities in Ny-Ålesund. The program supports research projects by providing funded access to infrastructure and services.
Please see the POLARIN website for detailed information on application deadlines and eligibility criteria: POLARIN – Polar Research Infrastructure Network
SIOS Access Program
The SIOS Access Program supports research activities that align with the objectives of the Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (SIOS). Funding is available to facilitate access to infrastructure and data relevant to Arctic research.
Please see the SIOS website for detailed information on application deadlines and eligibility criteria: Research Infrastructure Access Programme | sios-svalbard.org
SSG and AFG calls through the Research Council of Norway
The Research Council of Norway announces funding calls related to Arctic research, including support schemes such as Arctic Field Grant (AFG) and Svalbard Strategic Grants (SSG). These calls aim to strengthen scientific activity and international cooperation in Svalbard and Ny-Ålesund.
