In connection with the Svalbard Science Conference 2025 we will once again hold a Glaciology Flagship Workshop. The Workshop will be held at the Quality Hotel Expo Thursday October 30th and Friday October 31st, (end time Friday depends on the number of participants).

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from the various international groups studying Svalbard glaciology, to promote better collaboration and cooperation between the groups.
During the workshop, research challenges and opportunities will be identified, with special focus on data gaps and sources of uncertainty, new techniques and instrumentation, and optimizing program methodology.

Workshop topics can include the following:

  • Innovative technologies both in the field (e.g. new sensors, mapping using Surface from Motion, drones, terrestrial LiDAR) and remote (e.g. new satellite data, advanced models, AI)
  • Updates on ongoing research projects
  • Strategy for future funding of collaborative research.
  • Increase scientific cooperation between groups
  • Increase coordination of activities
  • Open sharing of data (how to make data available, use of international databases)
  • Dedicated discussion on SSF strategic objectives:
  • Reducing environmental impact

The workshop is funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The funding will cover the meeting costs, including dinner, lunch and coffee both days. We are also able to provide limited travel support. The amount will depend on how many requests there are. Priority will be given to students and early career scientists.
