National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), India
The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) is India’s premier R&D institution responsible for the country’s research activities in the Polar and Southern Ocean realms. NCPOR’s mandate is to take a facilitating role in the scientific research activities being undertaken by several national institutions and organizations in the Arctic, managing and implementing all scientific and logistics activities related to the Annual Indian Expeditions to the Arctic, and managing and running the Indian Arctic base Himadri.
NCPOR’s Arctic programme aims to contribute to the development, consolidation and dissemination of the current understanding of climate change, and its impacts and adaptations on Svalbard. The research includes atmospheric, biological, marine and earth sciences and glaciological studies.
NCPOR has a key function in Ny-Ålesund in that it assesses, accepts and hosts projects in Ny-Ålesund initiated by researchers from India.
NCPOR has been active in Ny-Ålesund (based at the Himadri) since 2008.
