SVALBARD ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT
|
The Svalbard Environmental Protection Act has been amended to strengthen protection for polar bears and seabirds. Key changes include a 300-meter distance requirement for polar bears (500 meters 1st March - 30th June). The distance requirement does not apply in inhabited areas, or to people staying in research stations, cabins, tents, or similar facilities. Furthermore, the act introduces a ban on drone use near bird cliffs 1st April to 31st August, but it will be possible to apply for an exemption from the rule for research purposes. These amendments aim to minimise human disturbance to wildlife, particularly during vulnerable seasons, and to maintain the pristine nature of Svalbard. The changes will come into effect on 1st January 2025, for more information see this link. An official English translation of the revised Svalbard Environmental Protection Act will be available some time in the Autumn of 2024.)
