Ny-Ålesund Research Station Newsletter

The Sun has returned to Ny-Ålesund, and with it, scientists are arriving to Ny-Ålesund Research Station too. The high season began in March for AWIPEV and NERC already, with a major permafrost drilling campaign, several snow- and glaciology projects and a course for PhD students. Soon, the spring glaciology and algae bloom fieldwork will start up again, and several media and policy makers are scheduled to visit Ny-Ålesund in April and May. The bright season has begun!

New satellite-based map shows ground movement in Svalbard

A new InSAR Svalbard map uses satellite measurements to monitor movements in Svalbard's ground, including Ny-Ålesund. This map, developed by NORCE, the Geological Survey of Norway and the Norwegian Space Agency, gives a tool to both researchers and authorities to better understand and follow trends with regards to ground movement and instability. See this link for an article (in Norwegian), and see "read more" for the map in full screen (in English).

News from SIOS

Are you using satellite, airborne, UAV, terrestrial or marine remote sensing data in Svalbard?

SIOS is collecting information on the Svalbard Science community's needs for remote sensing data, geospatial products and training. The survey is open to anyone producing or using satellite, airborne, UAV, terrestrial or marine remote sensing data in Svalbard. Your responses will be used to generate a User Requirement Document and help shape the SIOS Remote Sensing Service.

Publication: Exceptional high AOD over Svalbard in summer 2019

A new publication is out: “Exceptional high AOD over Svalbard in summer 2019: a multi-instrumental approach”, Herrero-Anta et al. (2026). This project used several different instruments and research partners in Ny-Ålesund to study the high aerosol density observed in 2016. A great example of Ny-Ålesund collaboration.

New structure and updated page of Terrestrial Ecosystems flagship

The Terrestrial Flagship seeks to increase collaboration and coordination among researchers studying the structure, functioning, and responses of terrestrial ecosystems around Ny-Ålesund and in the broader High Arctic context to environmental changes.
Rather than traditional working groups, the Terrestrial Flagship now promotes Joint Science Initiatives that bring researchers together around shared scientific challenges.

Recent publications and highlighted projects by terrestrial ecosystem flagship

Within the terrestrial flagship, several papers and dataset have recently been published.

Contribute to the special 30 years Dirigibile Italia issue

In 2027 “Dirigibile Italia”, one of the observatories contributing to the Ny-Ålesund Research Station, managed by the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), will mark 30 years of continuous multidisciplinary research in Svalbard. CNR celebrates this event by launching a dedicated joint Special Issue in two Elsevier journals. Contributions from research groups that have received support from or collaborated with Dirigibile Italia throughout these decades are warmly welcomed.

Ice Memory Sanctuary in Antarctica

A new sanctuary designed to preserve ice cores from endangered glaciers worldwide, including a core collected in Holtedahlfonna icefield, Svalbard, is now ready to host this invaluable climate archive. On 14 January 2026, the Ice Memory Sanctuary in Antarctica was officially inaugurated, marking an important step forward for cryospheric research. The first heritage ice cores, retrieved from endangered Alpine glaciers, have been safely stored in an ice cave at the French–Italian Concordia Station on the Antarctic Plateau.
